Pushing through…

S

We have had a few trip casualties. Wednesday going through NY was crazy windy--- the kayaks were like a giant sail on the roof, and our little Honda Fit was rocking like a ship on the open seas (YARR!). Unfortunately, the wind took one of the kayak cockpit covers– although very fortunately the things we had packed into the kayaks behind the cover managed to hold on! We’re going to look for a new cover today because I think our gas mileage is suffering (getting around 28mpg– fit normally gets 37.)

The second casualty was my Macbook computer. Not sure what happened, it just freezes whenever I turn it on now! There may be an emergency Apple store stop in the near future. Good thing we brought 2 spare computers :)

We took a pitstop at Niagara falls (which I learned I had been spelling wrong my whole life) where we checked out the falls, went on a ferris wheel ride, and had dinner at a Rainforest Cafe. Sarah was super excited that she got to use her new passport to get into Canada and see the other side of the falls— the Canadian side is crazy! It’s like a mini Vegas– casinos, freak shows, haunted houses, mini golf– and an amazing view of the river! At night they shine a light on the waterfall that slowly changes colors– beautiful!!

We drove through the night through the rest of New York, then Pennsylvania and Ohio– and we just broke into Indiana about an hour ago. Up until now the landscape has looked fairly familiar, but now it is slowly changing to flatter farmlands and feels like we’re getting into the mid-west.

We’re sticking to route 90 the whole way, with slight detours for sights along the way. We’ll stop early today and relax a little and sleep a lot! We may make it as far as the Mississippi today! After we cross the Mississippi we’ll slow down the pace for the western portion of the trip– we’ll have 30 hours of driving to do in 6 days, so we’ll have time to see some things along the way!

On the road!

We jammed packed the two pods successfully!  Almost all of our stuff fit.  The common phrase when loading the pods was, “This can go in the car.”  What we didn’t take into account is that the Fit isn’t a U-Haul!  With help from friends, we stuffed our car from roof to floor boards.

At 9:30pm last night we set off for our adventure driving a total of 200 miles.  We took a slight detour to my Mom’s house in Salem, NY so we could say our last goodbyes and sleep in a real bed one last time.

We woke up with a decent nights sleep and attempted to re-pack the car in a non-frustrated orderly manor.  After filling the two kayaks on the roof and doing some configuring we are still packed roof to floor but now we can get to the things we need to fairly easily.

Next on our list of things to do today was to glue the passenger mirror back on his car.  –It was knocked off by a hoodlum a couple months ag0.  A couple mechanics in friendly Salem helped us out and put the mirror back on.  Although, we were supposed to let it sit for 24 hours and we only had a half hour.  So…part of this adventure will be testing epoxy’s strength :)

At noon today we finally got on the road.  It’s cloudy skies and raining periodically.  To be continued…
